Always Appreciating Good Communication
by Krista W. Bergeron
When reflecting on the people that I know who are great communicators, I evaluate the value that they add through their ability to communicate well. I feel that these people are valuable in many areas of life. I have seen them make social environments more pleasant, businesses run more efficiently and family more connected. Thus, Ive come to realize that there is a tie between ones ability to communicate well, and ones ability to achieve success.
Sure, many skilled communicators were born with the strength to transmit information. People who communicate well seem to have an extraordinary ability to relate to, understand, and get the subtle intricacies of communication. So, does this suggest that anyone not having natural communication skills will not be good communicators? Probably not, and Ill tell you the reason. I think that communication is like any talent or ability and that it can be improved and nurtured through learning, conscious effort and practice.
Since I have a yearning to improve my communication tactics. Ive kept track of some of the things Ive learned on better communication.
I’ve learned to be engaged. To be a good communicator, its priority that there be no distractions, and that one be present. This includes both internal and external distractions, like my worries, cares, and concerns, and distractions and entertainment sources around me. Its of value to demonstrate good rapport, by showing that you are into the discussion by being engaged, focused, and present Clare and Sara Bronfman.
Ive also learned that its crucial to actually listen. I take time to tune into what the person may be feeling and what may be under the surface.
I’ve also learned to get curious and make a habit of asking good questions Sara Bronfman. This shows that I am engaged, interested, and want to know more. Although when I do this, I keep in mind the intention of cadence and flow, as too many questions will slow down the discussion. Ive also noted that effective communicators know what questions to ask to direct the flow of conversation and keep it positive and moving along nicely.
The most important thing in developing great communication expertise is training and practice, practice, practice. You can find good material that helps in giving tools for sharpening communication, including coaching programs and books. I believe that learning is something that I should be practicing for my whole life, and Im ready to take my communication skills to the next level.
I was recently referred to a coaching program called NXIVM, www.nxivm.com, that although I had heard of it and had never moved forward, I will be attending in the spring. It helped of course to see my friends own communication skills improve after he took their course last year.
